Check out our newest addition to the fleet! A special edition Volvo dedicated to Cystic Fibrosis Awareness! Keep reading to learn about Darren's story.
Darren Reeg is a Findlay resident who has lived with a Cystic Fibrosis diagnosis since he was six months old. He has fought this battle for 37 years and just recently has found a bit of relief.
Darren was in and out of hospitals his whole life. His hospital stays were often weeks long each time. As a child, this meant missing school and sporting events, and being frequently absent from school. As if being a child with a diagnosis that can seem lonely at times isn't enough, he often had to miss those events that are taken for granted by some.
Drew and Darren were introduced to each other through a mutual friend and the friendship just fit. They became great friends and Drew often visited Darren during his hospital stays. When Drew was driving truck in 2016, Darren even rode along with him to Pennsylvania. This was a difficult time in Darren's life because work was an on-going struggle. He often missed work due to his genetic disease and this would make it impossible to retain consistent employment. Most employers have point systems and he would find himself out of points due to hospital stays. He wasn't eligible for FMLA because he hadn't been at the company long enough but eventually, he was able to receive disability.
In 2020, Darren became aware of a clinical trial for a drug named Trikafta. After a couple of years of consistent use, Darren's health had dramatically improved! He was able to go back to work and he also got married. Present day, Darren is working at a career he has had for several years and has had a dramatic improvement in his health. While this sounds absolutely wonderful, and it is, the medication he is on also has some other side effects he is now dealing with. It is a delicate balance he must monitor and adjust as needed. Ongoing doctor appointments are a must and unfortunately there is quite a bit of travel involved since we are lacking locally for doctors specializing in CF. Darren reports the resources in our local area are pretty scarce. There used to be a Great Strides Walk held locally but it seems that it is no longer an event in our area.
We are a trucking company. A small business at that. We are family-oriented and very active in our community though. One of the best ways for us to help spread awareness for this important cause is to send the message miles and miles each day and across several states all while we are doing what we do best: delivering goods. Our drivers are professional but are also caring individuals with loved ones at home. Behind every diagnosis of any disease or illness is a human being with loved ones who are searching for answers and resources.
Our newest addition to the McGuire & Sons Trucking fleet is a special edition truck dedicated to not only Darren but everyone affected by Cystic Fibrosis. While the truck is very much a part of our working fleet, it will also be at events to also help spread awareness and get the word out. We are very committed to the part we play in making our community a positive, safe, and healthy place to live!
